Question 2: Gender and Development

What role does gender bias play in socioeconomic development? Consider the issue of gender equality in a specific African context, and suggest ways in which women can become more equal actors in the development of their communities at all levels.

Most economic development programs and policies envision development in Africa along the same lines as the industrial north. While these programs have led to some development, disaggregating development statistics by gender shows that the benefit of these policies has not reached women, and in some cases, even worsened gender inequality. Some critics of development programs postulate that it is not enough to focus on women’s access to technology, credit and other services, while ignoring the broader social realities of women’s lives. Consider this theory in a specific African context, and suggest ways to make economic development policies more equitable to both sexes.
